Modernization of circus arts in Hungary
Firstly I would like to thank the Organizing Committee for giving me the opportunity to participate in this event as director and to stand up here in front of you all!
We are surrounded by heritage and a grandiose past in this very building who had glorified circus arts for the past 130 years.Today we discussed much about the past, but have not addressed the question of the future, questions like "how to secure" circus arts for the coming 20 - 40 years. - What is the direction of this art form? In my opinion, this topic is perhaps the key element of this festival event in Saint Petersburg.
The Hungarian State Circus (MACIVA) flourished in the previous political era and had a basic structure similar to ROSGOS CIRK, certainly in a much-much smaller scale. Our organization received a very good infrastructure in the 70's, had a secure financial support by the state and the ministry of culture. We believe that Hungary inherited much from the Russian structured circus and has greatly benefited from it. Today we face new challenges, and perhaps again share some similarities even in our current problems and upcoming missions regarding the future.
Our circus is considered to be of the commercial type, so called "classic" in style to satisfy the audience we created and secured for our shows in the last decades. While circus arts has evolved and progressed in many various directions, we have kept our shows on safe side and have not risked to loose our audience. Unlike some of the contemporary theaters and circus companies who are mainly financed by grants and alternative sponsorships, the Hungarian State Circus has to support 80% of its expenses purely from ticket sales. During 10 months of play, we produce 3 different main shows, reaching 250-280.000 visitors each year. This figures are quite difficult to hold, as our venue is fixed in Budapest (being a stationary circus) and not being able to move towards new audiences. For this reason we must be very careful of our audiences when introducing new type of product. We recognize today that our main age group are children between 3-12 and the parents - grandparents who come along, but children seem to mature faster these days and sort of "grow out of the circus" quicker, soon leaving us to the under 10 segment. It is a key problem concerning the future and we need to target a wider spread of audience, addressing directly the adults and hopefully reaching the 14-30 year age group. A new group of people ready to absorb modern circus and its desires of revival as art.
I believe that introducing modernization to circus must be done gradually, avoiding any risk of losing already established customers. Directing and creating with elements of other performing arts, like theatre, dance... et cetera, is only on side of the mission, as creating the audience for this is certainly the most difficult step. Perhaps our most efficient tool is the International Circus Festival of Budapest, as this has already generated a specific audience who have been slowly and gradually educated towards different types and styles of circus performances.
This event in Saint Petersburg is a brave and very powerful initiative, that could carry a similar role in the modernization of the Russian Circus Arts, on a much larger scale. I wish to express our admiration to the organizing committee and offer our support in this great mission of securing a bright future for circus arts for the next generation to come.
